Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a predictive formula for cancer survivor survey completion and caregiver nomination.
  • To inform strategies for recruiting participants in cancer caregiver studies.
  • To enhance the generalizability of findings from cancer registry research.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized population-based data from eleven SEER/NPCR state cancer registries.
  • Included 19,294 cancer survivors (age >=18) diagnosed with one of 10 common cancers.
  • Employed logistic regression analysis to identify predictors of survey completion and caregiver nomination.

Main Results:

  • Approximately 30% of eligible cancer survivors completed the survey, with 42% nominating a caregiver.
  • Middle-aged, female, non-black, and breast/ovarian cancer survivors were more likely to participate and nominate.
  • Survivors with bladder/lung cancer and advanced-stage disease were less likely to participate and nominate.

Conclusions:

  • A formula derived from logistic regression can estimate the number of survivors needed for caregiver recruitment.
  • This approach enhances the utility of state cancer registries for research.
  • Facilitates broader, more generalizable research on cancer survivors and their caregivers across diverse cancer types and stages.
