Summary

Screening herbicides for grass seed crops using logarithmic spraying identified potential selective options. While some herbicides showed promise for controlling Poa pratensis in Festuca rubra L., selectivity indices did not consistently exceed the desired threshold.

    • Two ACCase herbicides (clodinafop-propargyl, fenoxaprop-P-ethyl) and a mixture of two ALS herbicides (mesosulfuron, iodosulfuron) showed potential for selective control of P. pratensis in Festuca rubra L.
    • Selectivity indices, however, did not consistently exceed the threshold of 2.0.
    • Logarithmic spraying allowed for rapid screening of herbicide compounds.

    Conclusions:

    • Logarithmic spraying is a valuable tool for rapidly identifying herbicides with favorable selectivity indices.
    • Careful experimental design is crucial to avoid confounding factors like growth rate and soil fertility.
    • Further research may be needed to optimize herbicide application for improved selectivity in grass seed crops.
