A fluorescence microscope uses fluorescent chromophores called fluorochromes, which can absorb energy from a light source and then emit this energy as visible light. Fluorochromes include naturally fluorescent substances (such as chlorophylls) and fluorescent stains that are added to the specimen to create contrast. Summary

Subfoveal perfluorocarbon liquid (SPCL) extraction can cause vision loss. Early SPCL removal leads to visual acuity recovery and central scotoma disappearance, independent of patient age or onset visual acuity.

Observation:

  • Two clinical cases of SPCL-induced complications were identified.
  • A literature review of five additional cases was conducted to analyze prognostic factors.

Findings:

  • Early extraction of SPCL is associated with rapid visual acuity recovery.
  • Disappearance of central scotoma is a common outcome following SPCL removal.
  • The degree of visual acuity recovery is not significantly influenced by patient age, initial visual acuity, or duration of SPCL presence (if < 3 months).

Implications:

  • Prompt surgical intervention for SPCL is recommended to optimize visual recovery.
  • These findings can guide clinical decision-making and patient counseling regarding SPCL complications.
  • Further research may elucidate long-term visual outcomes and refine management strategies.
