  • Data on outcome assessment methodology were extracted and analyzed from 126 identified trials.

    • 126 stroke trials were reviewed, with functional outcome as the primary endpoint in 100.
    • 47 different outcome measures were used, with the modified Rankin scale (64.3%) and Barthel index (40.5%) being most common.
    • Only 33.3% of trials provided full methodology details, revealing substantial heterogeneity in data collection.

    Conclusions:

    • Significant heterogeneity exists in functional outcome measures and assessment methodology across stroke trials.
    • This variability compromises the ability to compare trial results and conduct meta-analyses.
    • Mandatory explicit description of methodology and increased rigor are necessary to enhance the quality of stroke trial data.
