    Summary

    Untreated myeloma patients often show abnormal lymphocytes, impacting immune responses. These lymphocytes do not effectively respond to antigens, explaining reduced antibody production in multiple myeloma.

    Background:

    • Multiple myeloma is a cancer affecting plasma cells.
    • Immune dysfunction is a known complication of multiple myeloma.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate lymphocyte abnormalities in untreated multiple myeloma patients.
    • To determine if lymphocyte dysfunction correlates with disease presentation.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of blood cell counts, including lymphocytes, monocytes, and basophils.
    • Assessment of lymphocyte response to antigenic stimulation in vitro.
    • Evaluation of antibody production and immunoblast response after immunization.

    Main Results:

    • Lymphopenia and monocytosis observed in one-third of patients, without correlation.
    • Elevated medium basophilic lymphoid cells and PAS scores noted in some patients.
    • Majority of lymphocytes failed to respond to antigenic stimulation; no increase in immunoblasts or antibody titers post-immunization.

    Conclusions:

    • Abnormal lymphocytes are characteristic of untreated multiple myeloma.
    • Impaired lymphocyte response to antigens contributes to reduced antibody production in multiple myeloma.
