Summary

A double dumb-bell calculus caused scrotal swelling and urinary retention in an 8-year-old boy. Suprapubic cystolithotomy successfully removed the bladder stone, resolving symptoms.

Background:

  • Urinary tract stones can present with varied symptoms in children.
  • Posterior urethral obstruction requires prompt diagnosis and management.

Observation:

  • An 8-year-old male presented with right scrotal swelling, dysuria, and urinary retention.
  • A palpable hard mass in the posterior urethra was noted on per-rectal examination.

Findings:

  • Abdominal X-ray (KUB) identified a double dumb-bell calculus at the bladder base extending into the posterior urethra.
  • The calculus was the cause of the patient's obstructive urinary symptoms.

Implications:

  • Surgical intervention, specifically cystolithotomy, is effective for large or obstructive bladder calculi.
  • Prompt diagnosis and treatment of urethral calculi prevent complications and ensure recovery.
