Types of Toxins01:36

Types of Toxins

Humans continually engage with an environment rich in potentially harmful chemicals. These are introduced to our bodies through inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact. These chemicals exist in various forms, such as air and environmental pollutants, agricultural chemicals, organic solvents, and heavy metals.
Air pollutants, primarily gases, pose significant threats to respiratory health, leading to conditions like hypoxia, lung cancer, and in extreme cases, death.
Environmental pollutants like...
Toxoplasmosis01:28

Toxoplasmosis

Toxoplasmosis, a zoonotic disease caused by the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii, poses significant public health challenges globally due to its high seroprevalence and varied clinical manifestations. As an obligate intracellular parasite, T. gondii can infect all warm-blooded vertebrates, but felids are its only definitive hosts, shedding unsporulated oocysts into the environment. Humans typically acquire the infection through ingestion of tissue cysts in undercooked meat or oocysts from...
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease I: Introduction01:23

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease I: Introduction

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a common, preventable, and treatable respiratory disorder characterized by persistent symptoms and progressive airflow limitation. This limitation results from a combination of small-airway disease (obstructive bronchiolitis) and parenchymal destruction (emphysema), both driven by chronic inflammation from exposure to harmful particles or gases. The disease includes two main pathological entities: emphysema, marked by destruction of alveolar walls and...
Disorders of the Skeletal Muscle01:28

Disorders of the Skeletal Muscle

The clinical conditions affecting the skeletal muscle tissue are broadly categorized as musculoskeletal and neuromuscular disorders.
Musculoskeletal disorders
Musculoskeletal disorders involve injuries and conditions affecting the skeletal muscles and associated connective tissues. These disorders can arise from acute biomechanical stresses or chronic overuse and can occur across different age groups. Common injuries include sprains, fractures, and muscular strains, often resulting from...
Classification of Illness01:17

Classification of Illness

The meaning of illness is individualized to each person who experiences an alteration in health. In contrast, disease is a medical term indicating a pathological change in the structure and function of the body or mind. It is a condition that has specific symptoms and boundaries.
An illness is a response to a disease in which the person's level of functioning is changed compared with a previous level. The general classification of illness includes acute and chronic.
Acute illness is severe and...
Standard Precaution01:26

Standard Precaution

Standard precautions are the minimum infection control safeguards used while caring for all patients, irrespective of their disease condition. They help prevent the spread of common infectious microorganisms to healthcare workers, patients, and visitors in all healthcare settings.
Hand hygiene is the most crucial means to prevent the transmission of disease. Employers are legally required to provide their workers with personal protective equipment (PPE) to minimize exposure or contact with...

Summary

The Greek Social Security Institute

Area of Science:

  • Occupational health
  • Public health surveillance
  • Medical informatics

Background:

  • Occupational diseases (ODs) are significantly under-reported in Greece.
  • OD Medical Committees of the Greek Social Security Institute (Idryma Kinonikon Asfaliseon-IKA) are the primary data source for ODs.
  • Existing systems may hinder accurate OD reporting and recognition.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the outcomes of OD Medical Committees' assessments for OD Disablement Benefit (ODDB) claims.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of the ODDB claims process over a five-year period.
  • To identify potential systemic issues affecting OD recognition and reporting.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective analysis of 299 ODDB claims submitted to IKA between 2003 and 2007.

  • Claims were systematically reviewed on a monthly basis.
  • Data on diagnoses, recognition rates, and pension rates were extracted.
  • Main Results:

    • 171 OD cases were recognized (61% recognition rate), with 125 qualifying for ODDB (42% pension rate).
    • Allergic contact dermatitis was the most common diagnosis (40%), followed by lead toxicity (12%) and asthma (11%).
    • Lead toxicity cases exhibited the highest mean disability percentage (59%).

    Conclusions:

    • The study highlights significant flaws in Greece's OD recognition system, evidenced by a low number of ODDB claims.
    • Delays in updating the OD list, lack of unified reporting systems, and insufficient occupational physicians contribute to under-reporting.
    • Improvements are needed to enhance OD detection and compensation processes.
