Abstract:
Numerous studies have reported an association between anemia and increased mortality in older patients with chronic conditions such as coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, and chronic kidney disease. Findings from recent studies also suggest that the presence of anemia may influence physical function and disability in older adults. In this article, Dr Fried examines current evidence related to such consequences, particularly those observed in studies of older adults living in the community.
