Contact Angle01:13

Contact Angle

When a solid is dipped inside a liquid, the liquid surface becomes curved near the contact. For some solid–liquid interfaces, the liquid is pulled up along the solid, while for others, the liquid surface is convex or depressed near the solid surface. This phenomenon can be explained using the concept of cohesive and adhesive forces.
The adhesive force is the molecular force between molecules of different materials, that is, between the molecules of the solid and the liquid. The cohesive force...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

A new method, Axisymmetric Drop Shape Analysis-no apex (ADSA-NA), simplifies interfacial property measurements for drops without an apex. This technique offers more accurate and less scattered contact angle data compared to traditional methods.

Area of Science:

  • Surface Science
  • Materials Science
  • Physical Chemistry

Background:

  • Traditional Axisymmetric Drop Shape Analysis (ADSA) requires specific drop configurations.
  • Measuring interfacial properties, such as contact angles, can be experimentally challenging.
  • Existing methods may lead to scattered data for contact angles and surface tensions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Introduce a novel method, ADSA-no apex (ADSA-NA), for interfacial property measurement.
  • Simplify experimental setups for contact angle measurements.
  • Improve the accuracy and reduce data scattering in contact angle determinations.

Main Methods:

  • Developed ADSA-NA for analyzing drop shapes without an apex.
  • Incorporated a new numerical scheme for subpixel resolution of contact points.
  • Measured contact angles of alkanes on Teflon AF 1600.
  • Compared ADSA-NA results with theoretical image fitting analysis-axisymmetric interfaces (TIFA-AI) and standard ADSA.

Main Results:

  • ADSA-NA enables contact angle measurements with a simpler experimental setup.
  • Contact angles were measured with an accuracy of less than 0.2 degrees.
  • Measurements using ADSA-NA and TIFA-AI showed considerably less scatter than standard ADSA.
  • Accurate surface tension input enhances contact angle measurement accuracy.

Conclusions:

  • ADSA-NA is a viable and improved method for measuring interfacial properties.
  • The simplified experimental approach does not compromise accuracy.
  • Minimizing data scatter is achievable with apex-less drop configurations and advanced numerical methods.
