Background:

  • Neck lymphadenopathy is a common clinical presentation with diverse etiologies.
  • Cat scratch disease (CSD) is an infectious illness caused by Bartonella henselae, often transmitted by felines.
  • Timely diagnosis of CSD is crucial for appropriate patient management.

Observation:

  • A case report of a 40-year-old male presenting with unilateral regional lymphadenopathy is described.
  • The patient underwent surgical intervention for the enlarged lymph nodes.
  • Histopathologic examination confirmed the diagnosis of cat scratch disease.

Findings:

  • Regional lymphadenopathy, particularly in individuals with a history of animal contact, should raise suspicion for CSD.
  • Histopathological confirmation is a key diagnostic tool for CSD.
  • The diagnosis of CSD is infrequently reported in Poland.

Implications:

  • Considering CSD in the differential diagnosis of lymphadenopathy can prevent unnecessary or overly aggressive treatments.
  • Increased awareness and knowledge dissemination regarding CSD are needed in regions where it is rarely diagnosed.
  • Prompt recognition of CSD can significantly improve patient outcomes through targeted, less invasive therapies.
