Protocol for Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation with Symptom Provocation to Treat Obsessive-compulsive Disorder

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of electroacupuncture (EA) as an adjunctive treatment for patients with treatment-resistant OCD.
  • To compare outcomes of EA add-on therapy versus a waitlist control in managing severe OCD symptoms.
  • To assess the impact of EA on symptom severity using standardized clinical scales.

Main Methods:

  • A pilot, waitlist-controlled trial was conducted with 19 patients diagnosed with treatment-resistant OCD.
  • Participants were randomized to receive 12 sessions of EA (5 sessions/week) or a waitlist control, while continuing existing medications.
  • Symptom severity was measured using the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) and Clinical Global Impression-Severity (CGI-S) at baseline and study completion.

  • The results support the potential of EA as a viable complementary treatment option.
  • Further large-scale, controlled studies are recommended to confirm these findings and establish EA's role in OCD management.
