Area of Science:

  • Orthopaedic Surgery
  • Medical Technology Assessment

Background:

  • Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a common orthopedic procedure.
  • Leg alignment and implant positioning are crucial for TKA outcomes.
  • Computer-assisted navigation systems can enhance neutral leg alignment restoration.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To perform a cost analysis of computer-assisted TKA versus conventional techniques.
  • To evaluate the economic impact of computer-assisted TKA within the German DRG system.

Main Methods:

  • Acquisition, depreciation, maintenance, and update costs of navigation systems were analyzed.
  • Per-operation costs, including consumables and additional operating time, were considered.
  • Simulations were run for annual volumes of 25, 50, 100, 200, and 500 procedures.

Augmented Reality Navigation-Guided Core Decompression for Osteonecrosis of Femoral Head

Published on: April 12, 2022

Main Results:

  • Incremental costs of computer-assisted TKA are primarily influenced by annual volume and operative time.
  • A significant cost reduction was observed between 50 and 100 procedures annually.
  • At 100 TKAs/year with 14 mins extra time and 10-year depreciation, incremental costs ranged from €300-€395 per procedure.

Conclusions:

  • Computer-assisted TKA involves supplementary expenses.
  • An annual volume exceeding 50 procedures appears economically advantageous.
  • Long-term cost-effectiveness depends on potential reductions in revisions and improved clinical outcomes.
