Summary

Recruiting participants from completed Parkinson's disease (PD) clinical trials for long-term follow-up is feasible. This strategy enables continued collection of motor, non-motor, and biomarker data for PD natural history studies.

Background:

Understanding the long-term natural history of Parkinson's disease (PD) requires sustained patient follow-up.
Existing clinical trial cohorts offer a valuable resource for longitudinal observational studies.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the feasibility of the Longitudinal and Biomarker Study in PD (LABS-PD) approach.
To evaluate the recruitment, data linkage, and biomarker sampling from repurposed clinical trial cohorts.

Main Methods:

Retained participants from the PRECEPT clinical trial (PostCEPT cohort).
Assessed recruitment rates, data linkage capabilities, and biomarker collection (dopamine transporter imaging, olfaction, blood markers).
Linked clinical and biomarker data to publicly available DNA samples.

Main Results:

Achieved 76% enrollment (537/709) from PRECEPT to PostCEPT.
Successfully linked PRECEPT clinical and imaging data for 3-4 year follow-up.
Collected extensive biomarker data, including imaging, olfaction, and molecular markers, and linked them to genetic data.

Conclusions:

The LABS-PD strategy of repurposing clinical trial cohorts is feasible.
This approach effectively facilitates the collection of longitudinal clinical and biomarker data for Parkinson's disease research.
