Purpose of the Study:

  • To objectively assess bowel movements in IBS patients using video capsule endoscopy (VCE).
  • To compare VCE findings between IBS patients and healthy volunteers.

Main Methods:

  • Nine healthy volunteers and five IBS patients underwent VCE.
  • Analysis focused on luminal movement changes by quantifying low brightness area (LBA) pixels in VCE images.
  • Comparison of LBA volume and temporal changes between groups.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in the frequency of LBA was observed between groups.
  • Healthy individuals exhibited a trend towards larger average LBA volume compared to IBS patients.
  • Periodic changes in LBA volume over time were detected in 88.9% of healthy individuals versus 40.0% of IBS patients.

Conclusions:

  • VCE offers a potential new method for objectively evaluating functional bowel disorders.
  • The study demonstrated objective differences in bowel movement patterns between IBS patients and healthy controls.
