Background:

  • Motor speech disorders are considered rare in early Alzheimer's disease (AD).
  • Limited data exists on maximum performance tests of motor speech function in AD and related conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide data on motor speech function in patients with Alzheimer's disease and related disorders.
  • To analyze sequential speech motion rate across different cognitive functioning levels.

Main Methods:

  • Analyzed sequential speech motion rate in 236 memory clinic patients.
  • Included patients with varying degrees of cognitive impairment.

Main Results:

  • Sequential speech motion rate was significantly decreased in mild dementia due to AD.
  • Approximately 10% of Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment cases showed markedly reduced rates.
  • Progressive nonfluent aphasia showed strongly reduced rates, while semantic dementia did not differ from subjective cognitive impairment. Frontotemporal dementia had lower rates than AD.

Conclusions:

  • A subset of patients with cognitive decline exhibits markedly reduced articulatory agility.
  • The etiology of reduced articulatory agility in some mild cognitive impairment and mild AD patients remains undetermined.
  • Semantic dementia is not associated with impaired articulatory agility.
