Limitations in optical-fiber Sagnac gyro rotation sensors are overcome. We demonstrate that backward scattering causes errors but can be mitigated through system design and signal modulation for improved rotation rate measurement.
Area of Science:
- Optics
- Fiber optics
- Sensor technology
Background:
- Optical-fiber Sagnac gyro rotation sensors have operational limitations.
- These limitations result in a minimum measurable rotation rate higher than quantum noise limits.
Purpose of the Study:
- To identify and address limitations in optical-fiber Sagnac gyro rotation sensors.
- To investigate the impact of wave superposition from backward scattering on sensor accuracy.
- To propose mitigation strategies for improved rotation rate measurement.
Main Methods:
- Analysis of wave superposition phenomena in Sagnac interferometers.
- Investigation of backward scattering effects on nonreciprocal wave pairs.
- Development and application of system design and signal modulation techniques.
Main Results:
- Backward scattering of incident waves generates a nonreciprocal pair of waves.
- This wave superposition is a significant source of error in rotation rate measurement.
- Appropriate system design and signal modulation effectively mitigate these errors.
Conclusions:
- The superposition of backward-scattered waves limits optical-fiber Sagnac gyro performance.
- Mitigation strategies involving system design and signal modulation can overcome these limitations.
- This research enables more precise rotation rate measurements with fiber optic gyroscopes.
