Group Therapy

Group therapy is a sociocultural approach to psychological treatment, where individuals with shared psychological challenges come together under the guidance of a mental health professional. This therapeutic modality offers unique opportunities for individuals to connect, share, and grow within the context of a supportive group. By fostering mutual understanding and collaboration, group therapy can address a range of psychological concerns effectively, often complementing or surpassing the...

Coping Strategies: Problem Focused

Coping strategies are methods people use to manage, tolerate, or reduce the effects of stressors. These strategies involve both behavioral and psychological actions to handle stressful situations. One common approach is problem-focused coping, which aims to change or eliminate the source of stress rather than merely addressing its consequences. This method involves taking direct action to resolve the issue causing stress.
For example, consider a student who struggles to understand their...

Treatment Strategies for Psychological Disorders

Treatment approaches for psychological disorders fall into three main categories: psychological, biological, and sociocultural. Each approach targets different aspects of mental health, requiring varying levels of education and training.
Psychological therapies focus on modifying emotions, thoughts, and behaviors through talking, interpreting, listening, rewarding, challenging, and modeling. Clinical psychologists, counselors, and social workers commonly practice psychotherapy. Clinical...

Coping Strategies: Emotion Focused01:20

Coping Strategies: Emotion Focused

Emotion-focused coping refers to a set of strategies aimed at managing the emotional impact of stressors, rather than directly addressing their causes. This approach involves altering one's emotional response to stressful situations to reduce their psychological effects. For example, individuals might talk with a friend or engage in activities like journaling to express their feelings. Such actions can help achieve emotional clarity or release, providing the psychological stability needed to...

Psychosis: Goals of Pharmacotherapy

Antipsychotic drugs are a crucial treatment method for acute and chronic psychoses, bipolar illness, and behavioral disorders. The selection of these drugs depends on several factors, including the state of the disease, clinical judgment, possible drug interactions, and the patient's sensitivity to adverse effects. In immediate scenarios, such as delirium and dementia, short-term treatment with low doses of high-potency typical or atypical agents can effectively manage symptom exacerbation. For...

Summary

Psycho-educational therapy for schizophrenia showed limited specific advantages over supportive dialogues or rehabilitation. While both approaches improved patient outcomes, the experimental group saw slight benefits in reduced rehospitalizations and enhanced coping strategies.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychology

Background:

  • Schizophrenia and schizo-affective disorder require effective psychosocial interventions.
  • Psycho-educational and coping-oriented therapies aim to improve patient outcomes and self-management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of a psycho-educational, coping-oriented therapy programme (PKB) for patients with schizophrenia or schizo-affective disorder.
  • To compare the PKB programme against supportive dialogues and occupational rehabilitation.

Main Methods:

  • A controlled, prospective study design was employed with 82 patients.
  • The experimental group received the Therapy Manual for Psycho-education and Coping with Illness (PKB).
  • Assessments included psychopathology, re-hospitalisations, knowledge, functional outcome, and coping strategies at multiple time points.

Main Results:

  • Both the experimental and control groups showed significant improvements in psychopathology and general functioning.
  • The experimental group demonstrated specific advantages in reduced rehospitalisations during the first year post-therapy.
  • Improvements in certain coping strategies were also noted in the experimental group.

Conclusions:

  • Various psychosocial interventions, including psycho-educational approaches, can be effective in treating schizophrenia.
  • Further research is needed to identify patient subgroups that may particularly benefit from specific interventions.
