Bone Disorders

Aging and its effect on bone remodeling is the most common cause of bone disorders. In young and healthy people, bone deposition and resorption happen at an equal rate to maintain optimal bone health.
Bone deposition is also affected by the levels of sex hormones like estrogen and testosterone that promote osteoblast activity and bone matrix synthesis. Summary

Multifocal osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer in children, presents unique challenges. Early chemotherapy response and aggressive surgery show promise but survival remains linked to initial tumor response.

Background:

  • Osteosarcoma is a primary malignant bone tumor common in children, typically affecting long bone metaphyses.
  • Multifocal osteosarcoma, a rare variant (0.5-4%), presents with multiple bone lesions, sometimes without pulmonary metastases, and carries a poor prognosis.

Observation:

  • This report details two pediatric cases of multifocal synchronous osteosarcoma in 14-year-olds.
  • Both cases exhibited multiple bone lesions without initial pulmonary metastases.
  • Treatment involved neoadjuvant chemotherapy, oncologic surgery, and adjuvant chemotherapy.

Findings:

  • Tumor response to chemotherapy varied, being good in one patient and poor in the other.
  • Complete tumor resection (R0) was achieved in both patients.
