Area of Science:

  • Pharmacology
  • Nephrology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Renal cysts can act as reservoirs for infection.
  • Understanding antibiotic penetration into renal cysts is crucial for effective treatment.
  • Ceftazidime is a commonly used antibiotic for various infections.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate ceftazidime concentrations in uninfected renal cysts.
  • To evaluate the impact of different dosing regimens on cyst fluid levels.
  • To determine the potential of ceftazidime for treating renal cyst infections.

Main Methods:

  • 25 patients with uninfected renal cysts were studied.
  • Two groups received different ceftazidime (CAZ) dosing regimens prior to cyst puncture.
  • Cyst fluid CAZ concentrations were measured at various time points post-infusion.

Main Results:

  • Group I (single 2g dose) showed mean CAZ cyst concentration of 0.71 µg/mL.
  • Group II (multiple higher doses) demonstrated significantly higher mean CAZ cyst concentration of 5.55 µg/mL.
  • Cyst fluid CAZ levels remained detectable up to 6 hours post-infusion.

Conclusions:

  • Higher and more frequent dosing of ceftazidime leads to superior concentrations in renal cysts.
  • Ceftazidime shows potential for treating infections within renal cysts.
  • Further studies are warranted to establish optimal therapeutic regimens.
