Observation of coherent Raman scattering in thin-film optical waveguides

Abstract:
We have measured coherent surface Raman scattering in 2-microm-thick films of polystyrene by guiding the incident and scattered light in the film. Peak conversion efficiencies of 0.2% were found, in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions.

The underlying principle of Raman spectroscopy is based on the interaction between light and matter, specifically molecules' inelastic scattering of photons.
