This study developed a selective method using imprinted polymers for melamine extraction from environmental water. The technique effectively detects melamine in various water samples with high accuracy and recovery rates.

Area of Science:

  • Environmental Chemistry
  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Polymer Science

Background:

  • Melamine contamination in environmental water poses risks.
  • Selective and sensitive detection methods are crucial for water quality monitoring.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction (MISPE) method for melamine detection.
  • To evaluate the efficiency and selectivity of cyromazine-imprinted polymers for melamine extraction.

Main Methods:

  • Synthesis of cyromazine-imprinted polymers in a water-methanol system.
  • Solid-phase extraction (SPE) for melamine isolation from aqueous samples.
  • High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for melamine quantification.
  • Adsorption tests and Scatchard analysis to characterize binding properties.

Main Results:

  • The imprinted polymers exhibited selective binding to melamine with dissociation constants (KD) of 0.032 µmol/L and 0.26 µmol/L.
  • The method demonstrated good linearity (r > 0.999) from 0.500 to 100.0 ng/mL.
  • Limits of detection (LODs) were approximately 0.1 ng/mL and limits of quantification (LOQs) were 0.5 ng/mL.
  • Mean recoveries exceeded 86.3% with relative standard deviations (RSD) below 8.8% for spiked environmental water samples.

Conclusions:

  • The developed MISPE method is effective for selective melamine extraction and enrichment from environmental water.
  • The method is sensitive, accurate, and suitable for routine water quality analysis.
