Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.
Reliability and Validity01:29

Reliability and Validity

Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Diagnosing kleptomania is challenging. The Structured Clinical Interview for Kleptomania (SCI-K) tool shows excellent reliability and validity for identifying kleptomania in psychiatric patients.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Diagnostic Instruments

Background:

  • Kleptomania diagnosis is often difficult for clinicians.
  • Existing diagnostic methods may lack sufficient reliability and validity.
  • A standardized tool is needed to improve kleptomania assessment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a DSM-IV-based diagnostic instrument for kleptomania.
  • To assess the reliability and validity of the Structured Clinical Interview for Kleptomania (SCI-K).
  • To evaluate the classification accuracy of the SCI-K using longitudinal data.

Main Methods:

  • Administered the SCI-K to 112 psychiatric outpatients.
  • Assessed test-retest and inter-rater reliability.
  • Determined concurrent and discriminant validity against established measures.
  • Examined diagnostic accuracy using longitudinal illness course.

Main Results:

  • SCI-K demonstrated excellent test-retest (Phi=0.956) and inter-rater reliability (Phi=0.718).
  • Concurrent validity was strong (Phi=0.769) with a self-report measure.
  • Discriminant validity was observed with a depression measure (r=-0.020).
  • SCI-K showed high sensitivity and specificity in longitudinal assessment.

Conclusions:

  • The SCI-K is a reliable and valid instrument for diagnosing kleptomania.
  • The tool is effective in psychiatric outpatient settings.
  • Further research with larger, diverse populations is needed to confirm generalizability.
