Summary

Garbage truck fuel consumption is highest during waste collection, especially on rural routes. Optimizing collection routes can significantly reduce diesel use, saving fuel daily.

  • To estimate and compare fuel consumption of co-collection and normal garbage packer trucks during daily activities.

  • To evaluate potential strategies for reducing fuel consumption in waste collection.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized global positioning system (GPS) data and fuel consumption records.
  • Analyzed fuel consumption across seven different daily activities for two truck types.
  • Calculated fuel rates (L/km) and per-kilogram waste collection fuel requirements.

  • Reducing loading time per stop showed minimal potential for fuel reduction.
