Area of Science:

  • Immunology
  • Virology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) lymphoproliferation is a severe post-transplant complication.
  • It arises from uncontrolled EBV-infected B cells, normally managed by cytotoxic T cells.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review current strategies for early detection and treatment of EBV-associated B-cell lymphoproliferation.
  • To highlight challenges in managing this life-threatening condition.

Main Methods:

  • Review of early detection methods, focusing on serial EBV-DNA load measurement.
  • Analysis of current and emerging treatment modalities.

Main Results:

  • Early detection through EBV-DNA monitoring identifies high-risk patients.
  • Treatment involves modulating immune response or targeting B cells directly.

Conclusions:

  • While early detection has improved outcomes, challenges remain in defining preemptive therapy indications.
  • Integrating novel and conventional therapies is crucial for better patient management.
