Treatment Resistant Cancers02:56

Treatment Resistant Cancers

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. A cancer cell is genetically unstable and hence can mutate faster. They can also modify their microenvironment and escape immune surveillance. The difficulties in treating cancer are further compounded by the emergence of rapid resistance to anticancer drugs. The most common ways to attain resistance in cancer cells include alteration in drug transport and metabolism, modification of drug target, elevated DNA damage response, or...

Primary Lymphoid Organs01:16

Primary Lymphoid Organs

Primary lymphoid organs are pivotal in the formation, development, and maturation of lymphocytes, the white blood cells that serve as the backbone of our immune system. This crucial function underscores their fundamental role in maintaining our overall health and immunity. The two primary lymphoid organs of prime importance are the red bone marrow and the thymus.
The red bone marrow is a soft, spongy tissue nestled in the interior of long bones such as the humerus and femur. It is the site...

Summary

Late HIV diagnosis leads to preventable deaths. This study found 41% of lymphoma patients missed HIV screening. Opt-out screening may improve testing rates for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Late diagnosis of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) contributes to mortality among patients.
  • Physicians are urged to enhance HIV testing protocols.
  • HIV screening uptake in specific patient groups requires evaluation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To audit the uptake of opt-in HIV screening among lymphoma patients.
  • To identify barriers to HIV testing in this patient cohort.
  • To evaluate the potential of opt-out screening strategies.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective audit of HIV screening uptake.
  • Study conducted at University College London Hospital.
  • Involved 113 lymphoma patients undergoing opt-in HIV screening.

Main Results:

  • 46 out of 113 lymphoma patients (41%) were not tested for HIV.
  • The opt-in screening approach resulted in a significant number of missed testing opportunities.
  • Comparison with antenatal setting data suggests potential for improvement.

Conclusions:

  • Opt-in HIV screening is insufficient for maximizing testing rates in lymphoma patients.
  • Adopting an opt-out HIV screening strategy could significantly increase uptake.
  • Implementing opt-out screening is recommended to improve early HIV detection in at-risk populations.
