Summary

Hallux varus, a rare foot deformity, presents in both congenital and acquired forms. Congenital hallux varus is more common, often appearing bilaterally with other foot deformities.

Background:

Hallux varus is a rare foot deformity characterized by the deviation of the great toe outwards.
Understanding the etiology and presentation of hallux varus is crucial for effective management.
This study reviews cases treated over several decades to analyze patterns in this rare condition.

Observation:

The study analyzed 14 patients treated for hallux varus between 1951 and 1987.
Congenital hallux varus was observed in 11 out of 14 cases.
The majority of congenital cases were bilateral and associated with multiple other foot deformities.

Findings:

Congenital hallux varus is the predominant form of the condition.
Bilateral presentation and syndromic association with other foot deformities are common in congenital hallux varus.
Acquired hallux varus, though less common, also requires consideration in differential diagnosis.

Implications:

Early recognition and diagnosis of congenital hallux varus are essential for timely intervention.
Comprehensive evaluation for associated anomalies is recommended in cases of congenital hallux varus.
Further research into the genetic and developmental factors contributing to congenital hallux varus may improve treatment strategies.
