Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Rehabilitation Medicine
  • Integrative Health

Background:

  • Limited research exists on complementary and alternative treatments (CAM) for adults with cerebral palsy (CP).
  • National surveys indicate a majority of adults with chronic disabilities utilize CAM.
  • Adults with chronic disabilities report perceived benefits from CAM, including pain relief, stress reduction, and improved well-being.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review complementary and alternative methods (CAM) used in children with cerebral palsy (CP) that may be applicable to adults.
  • To discuss potential benefits and risks of CAM for adults with CP.
  • To highlight the need for research into CAM utilization and efficacy in adults with CP.

Main Methods:

  • Review of existing literature on CAM in children with CP.

  • Discussion of CAM modalities potentially transferable to adult CP management.
  • Analysis of patient perspectives on CAM and healthcare decision-making.
  • Main Results:

    • While specific studies on adults with CP are lacking, CAM use is prevalent among adults with chronic disabilities.
    • Adults with CP may continue practices like yoga, meditation, and hippotherapy from childhood.
    • Adults with CP report increased feelings of control and well-being with CAM.

    Conclusions:

    • CAM therapies, including exercise-based activities and stress-reduction techniques, are frequently used by adults with chronic disabilities.
    • Further research is essential to identify prevalent CAM methods in adults with CP and conduct rigorous outcome studies.
    • Understanding the efficacy and safety of CAM is crucial for both patients and conventional healthcare providers.
