Levels of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention01:26

Levels of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention

Health promotion allows a person to control the determinants of health, resulting in an improved health status. It enhances the quality of life and reduces premature deaths. Health promotion and illness prevention programs help people make beneficial choices to reduce the risk of disease and disabilities. There are three health promotion and illness prevention levels: primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention.
In primary prevention, actions taken before disease onset prevent the disease from...

Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention II

The person's health status fluctuates continually, varying from being in good health to becoming ill and returning to being healthy. To understand the concept of illness prevention, there are two models. First, the health-illness continuum model is a graphic representation of an individual's wellness. It states that a person is considered healthy in the absence of physical disease and the presence of good emotional health.
The agent-host-environment model states that disease results from...

Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention I

A model is a theoretical way to understand a concept or an idea. Models can overcome barriers to health regardless of diverse economic and cultural backgrounds. In addition, models make the task easier by providing different ways to approach complex issues. There are two major health promotion models: the health belief model and the health promotion model.
The health belief model (HBM) attempts to predict health-related behavior in specific belief patterns. According to the HBM, a person's...
Restorative Care01:19

Restorative Care

Restorative care is provided once a patient has been discharged from a healthcare facility and requires additional services. The additional services include home care, rehabilitation programs, and extended care. Restorative care centers help the patient regain their previous level of functioning or acquire a new level of functioning due to the incapacitating effects of a disease or a disability. It aims to assist patients in enhancing their quality of life by encouraging independence,...
Concepts of Health and Illness01:29

Concepts of Health and Illness

Health is a condition of the body, mind, and spirit where an individual remains free from illness. Similarly, wellness is an active state, including living a lifestyle that promotes physical, mental, and emotional health. Physical health is critical for the overall well-being and can be affected by lifestyle, activity level, diet, and behavior. The highest attainable standard of health is a fundamental and universal human right. Consider Lisa, a fifteen-year-old born with congenital...

Summary

Surgical residents reported low presenteeism, which did not significantly improve after a workplace health program. Junior residents showed a significant improvement in presenteeism compared to senior residents.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Occupational Health
  • Surgical Training

Background:

  • Surgical residents experience significant workplace stress, potentially leading to decreased presenteeism.
  • Presenteeism, defined as the ability to perform quality work at maximum productivity while on the job, can be negatively impacted by health and workplace factors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of a workplace health promotion program on presenteeism levels in surgical residents.
  • To assess whether improving workplace hygiene influences presenteeism in a surgical resident cohort.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of surgical residents completed the Stanford Presenteeism Scale: Health Status and Employee Productivity (SPS-6) questionnaire.
  • Surveys were administered before and one year after the implementation of a workplace health promotion program.

Main Results:

  • Initial survey showed mean SPS-6 scores (17.3 +/- 4.5) well below population norms (24 +/- 3).
  • One year post-intervention, mean SPS-6 scores slightly improved to 18.3 +/- 4.6 (p = 0.35).
  • Subgroup analysis revealed a trend toward improvement in participants (p = 0.15) and a significant difference between junior and senior residents (p = 0.034).

Conclusions:

  • Surgical residents at this institution exhibit presenteeism levels below population values.
  • Validated tools like the SPS-6 can aid in objective analysis for resident education and workload management.
  • While the health promotion program showed a trend, further research with larger sample sizes is needed to confirm its efficacy.
