Urologic Endoscopic Procedure: Cystoscopic Examination01:28

Urologic Endoscopic Procedure: Cystoscopic Examination

Meaning of Cystoscopic Examination:Cystoscopy is an essential diagnostic tool in urology that is used to assess the structure and function of the genitourinary system. It provides a direct view of the urethra, bladder, and, in some cases, the ureteral openings. This procedure helps detect structural abnormalities, infections, cancers, and blockages in the urinary tract. There are two types of cystoscopy:Flexible cystoscopy is commonly performed in outpatient settings due to its less invasive...

Endoscopic Studies I: Bronchoscopy and Thoracoscopy

Endoscopy is a non-surgical medical technique used to examine a person's internal organs and vessels. This lesson will focus on two types of endoscopic studies: bronchoscopy and thoracoscopy.
Bronchoscopy
Description
Bronchoscopy is a procedure that involves direct visualization of the larynx, trachea, and bronchi for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. A flexible fiber optic or rigid bronchoscope is used to carry out the procedure. The fiber-optic bronchoscope is more frequently used due to...

Summary

This study on eye enucleation found retinoblastoma is the leading cause in children, while choroidal melanoma and painful blind eyes are common in adults. Males and pediatric patients were most frequently affected by enucleation.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Oncology
  • Pediatrics

Background:

  • Eye enucleation is a surgical procedure to remove the eyeball.
  • Understanding the trends in enucleation indications and orbital implant usage is crucial for patient care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze patient demographics, enucleation causes, and orbital implant trends.
  • To provide insights into the common reasons for enucleation and associated surgical practices.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study reviewed 70 patients undergoing enucleation from 2004-2007.
  • Data collected included patient history, demographics, histopathology for enucleation cause, and orbital implant type.

Main Results:

  • Pediatric patients (51.42%) and males (62.85%) were most commonly affected.
  • Retinoblastoma (42.85%) was the primary cause in children; choroidal melanoma and painful blind eye were common in adults.
  • Orbital implants were used in 45.71% of cases, with erosion being a frequent complication.

Conclusions:

  • Males and pediatric patients are disproportionately affected by eye enucleation.
  • Retinoblastoma in children and choroidal melanoma/painful blind eye in adults are key indications for enucleation.
