Background:

  • The Colored Eco-Genetic Relationship Map (CEGRM) is an assessment tool integrating ecomaps, genograms, and genetic pedigrees.
  • CEGRM provides insights into social networks and health information exchange patterns in adults.
  • Its utility for children's social and health information landscapes remains unexplored.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore the feasibility and utility of adapting CEGRM elements for use with children.
  • To understand children's social networks and health information sources through a modified CEGRM.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty children (7-10 years) participated in one-on-one sessions.
  • Children created modified CEGRMs using adapted art directives.
  • A qualitative descriptive design and analysis approach were employed.

Main Results:

  • Children successfully created modified CEGRMs, yielding significant insights.
  • Analysis revealed diverse social networks and surprising health information sources and patterns.
  • Extended family, other adults, peers, and media were prevalent, often preferred over nuclear family for health information; mothers were rarely primary sources.

Conclusions:

  • Elements of the CEGRM are easily adaptable for children using drawings.
  • The modified CEGRM can serve as an effective adjunctive assessment and interventional tool.
  • This tool can benefit parents, researchers, educators, and providers working with young children.
