Summary

Acupuncture points, or aesthetic-loci, can serve as anatomical references in plastic surgery (PS) for improved surgical marking. This study suggests aesthetic-loci are useful for enhancing facial and body contouring outcomes.

Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Anatomy
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine

Background:

  • Acupuncture points (acupoints) are proportionally and symmetrically distributed on the body surface according to Oriental Anthropometry (OA).
  • Acupoints, when viewed as aesthetic-loci, may offer valuable reference points for plastic surgery (PS).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To utilize aesthetic-loci as anatomical references for surgical marking in aesthetic plastic surgery.

Main Methods:

  • An observational study involving 106 patients undergoing various aesthetic surgeries.
  • Aesthetic-loci were correlated with conventional surgical markings for procedures like breast surgeries, abdominoplasty, and facial surgeries.
  • Surgical outcomes (ASO) and patient satisfaction (TS) were assessed over one year.

Main Results:

  • Aesthetic-surgical-outcome (ASO) averaged 75.3%.
  • Patient satisfaction (TS) revealed 58.5% "good" results, 38.7% "excellent" results, and 2.8% "fair" results.

Conclusions:

  • Aesthetic-loci show potential as anatomical references for surgical marking in plastic surgery.
  • Further research is needed to confirm the efficacy of Oriental Anthropometry (OA) in achieving balanced and harmonious facial and body contours.
