Abstract:
An initiative by the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh radiology department to reduce sedations of pediatric patients undergoing computerized tomography scanning has resulted in a significant decline in sedation rates, reduced rates of sedation-related complications, a significant productivity gain as a result of increased procedural volume, improved patient and family satisfaction, and no diminution of image quality. The techniques used to implement this initiative are applicable in any healthcare setting in which pediatric patients are routinely sedated for medical procedures.
