Hypothyroidism was found in 4.5% of Dogue de Bordeaux and 2.4% of Leonbergers, but these dogs showed no reproductive issues. No link between thyroid levels and fertility was statistically proven in this study.
Area of Science:
- Veterinary Medicine
- Endocrinology
Background:
- Hypothyroidism is a common endocrine disorder in dogs.
- Reproductive health can be influenced by thyroid function.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the incidence of hypothyroidism in specific dog breeds.
- To investigate the association between hypothyroidism and reproductive disease in dogs.
Main Methods:
- Clinical and reproductive examinations were performed on 204 dogs from five breeds.
- Plasma concentrations of thyroxine and thyroid-stimulating hormone were measured.
Main Results:
- Hypothyroidism was identified in Dogue de Bordeaux (4.5%) and Leonbergers (2.4%).
- Affected dogs did not exhibit reproductive disease.
- A higher prevalence of low thyroxine was observed in male Dogue de Bordeaux (70%) compared to other breeds.
Conclusions:
- Hypothyroidism in the studied breeds does not appear to be directly linked to reproductive disease.
- Further research is needed to confirm the relationship between thyroid status and fertility in dogs.
