Summary
We measured the nonlinear optical properties of polythiophene and related polymers. The third-order nonlinear susceptibility (X(3)) was found to be exceptionally large and fast above the polymer band gap.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Polymer Science
- Nonlinear Optics
Background:
- Polythiophene and related polymers are investigated for their nonlinear optical properties.
- Understanding the third-order nonlinear susceptibility (X(3)) is crucial for optoelectronic applications.
Purpose of the Study:
- To measure the third-order nonlinear susceptibility (X(3)) in polythiophene and a series of polycondensed thiophene-based polymers.
- To investigate the dependence of X(3) on spectral region relative to the polymer absorption edge.
Main Methods:
- Utilized the folded-boxcar four-wave mixing technique.
- Performed measurements above and below the polymer absorption edge.
Main Results:
- The third-order nonlinear coefficient (X(3)) was measured for polythiophene and related polymers.
- Above the absorption edge, X(3) was found to be among the largest and fastest observed in polymeric materials.
Conclusions:
- Polythiophene-based polymers exhibit significant nonlinear optical responses.
- The large and fast X(3) values above the band gap suggest potential for high-performance optoelectronic devices.
