Residual aluminum and its dichroism in anodized alumina thin films

Abstract:
Aluminum is anodized in a sulfuric acid solution with a large current density. It is shown for the first time to our knowledge that the aluminum is only partially oxidized in the process and that the alumina thin film containing the residual aluminum acts as a polarizer with a large extinction ratio in the infrared-wavelength region.
