Abstract:
The indication of surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion is to correct the transverse maxillary deficiencies. With the purpose of increasing the width of narrow upper dental arch and of the nasal cavity, maxillary expansion can provide dental arch space for teeth alignment, and improve the masticatory efficiency and nasal respiration. Comparing to teeth anchored palatal expansion, bone anchored technique can reduce the periodental damage and root resorption of supporting teeth. The results of bone anchored method are stable and the relapse is low for long term follow-up. More time on surgical duration is the main disadvantage. Some sorts of bone anchored appliance are widely used in clinic.
