Summary

Transumbilical single-incision laparoscopic colectomy is a feasible minimally invasive surgery for colonic neoplasms. This technique, using conventional instruments, demonstrated safety and efficacy in a small case series.

Background:

  • Transumbilical single-incision laparoscopic colectomy (SILC) represents an evolution in minimally invasive colorectal surgery.
  • This case series evaluates the feasibility of SILC using standard laparoscopic instruments.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the safety and efficacy of transumbilical SILC for colonic neoplasms.
  • To determine if conventional laparoscopic equipment is sufficient for this procedure.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective case series of seven patients undergoing transumbilical SILC for colonic neoplasms.
  • Utilized three conventional laparoscopic trocars inserted through a single umbilical incision.
  • Intracorporeal mobilization and vessel ligation with extracorporeal anastomosis were performed.

  • No conversions to multiport laparoscopy or open surgery were required.
  • Average operating time was 89 minutes with no significant blood loss or complications.
  • Average hospital stay was 5.4 days, with adequate tumor margins and lymph node yield (15 nodes).

  • The procedure can be performed effectively using standard laparoscopic instruments without additional cost.
