Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence and types of nail changes in kidney transplant recipients.
  • To compare nail pathology in KTR with age- and sex-matched healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study included 302 KTR and 302 healthy controls.
  • Nail changes were assessed, and cultures were performed for suspected onychomycosis.
  • Statistical analysis compared findings between KTR and controls.

Main Results:

  • 40.1% of KTR had nail changes versus 34.4% in controls.
  • Onychomycosis, Muehrcke's nail, and leuconychia were significantly more prevalent in KTR.
  • Absent lunula and longitudinal ridging were common in both groups, with no significant difference.

Conclusions:

  • KTR exhibit increased rates of onychomycosis, Muehrcke's nail, and leuconychia compared to the general population.
  • Absent lunula might be a normal finding in the Egyptian population.
  • Regular nail monitoring in KTR is recommended.
