Area of Science:

  • Environmental Science
  • Radiochemistry
  • Agricultural Science

Background:

  • Mafic rock blocks with high uranium content were identified in Pedra and Venturosa, Pernambuco.
  • Elevated uranium levels can lead to increased natural radioactivity in the environment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantify lead-210 (210Pb) concentrations in forage from the affected areas.
  • To assess the potential risk of radionuclide ingestion by livestock and subsequent human exposure.

Main Methods:

  • Sampling of forage from farms in Pedra and Venturosa.
  • Measurement of 210Pb concentrations in dry matter samples using gamma spectrometry.

Main Results:

  • 210Pb concentrations in forage ranged from 2 to 503 Bq kg(-1).

  • The high levels indicate significant bioavailability of 210Pb in the local forage.
  • Conclusions:

    • The elevated 210Pb levels in forage present a considerable ingestion hazard for dairy cows.
    • Contamination of milk with 210Pb is a potential risk to the human population in the region.
