Summary

Electrodermal response modulation (ERM), a measure of how the body reacts to predictable versus unpredictable stimuli, appears to be a potential biomarker for substance dependence (SD). Poor ERM was significantly linked to substance dependence in this study.

Background:

  • Electrodermal response modulation (ERM) is a psychophysiological measure reflecting the difference in skin conductance response to predictable versus unpredictable aversive stimuli.
  • Impaired ERM has been previously associated with substance dependence (SD).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether ERM serves as a specific biomarker for substance dependence (SD) or for externalizing disorders more broadly.
  • To examine the relationship between ERM and diagnoses of SD and personality disorders (PD).

  • Participants included 83 controls, 52 with SD only, 12 with PD only, and 35 with comorbid SD and PD.
  • ERM was assessed by measuring skin conductance responses to predictable and unpredictable auditory stimuli.
