Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever01:26

Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever

Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF) is a severe tick-borne illness caused by Rickettsia rickettsii, a Gram-negative, coccobacillary bacterium. This pathogen is an obligate intracellular parasite, requiring a host cell for replication. Transmission occurs through the bite of an infected tick. In the United States, the most important vectors are Dermacentor variabilis (American dog tick) and Dermacentor andersoni (Rocky Mountain wood tick), though other tick species may also serve as vectors.
Leishmaniasis01:30

Leishmaniasis

Leishmaniasis is a protozoal disease caused by species of the genus Leishmania and transmitted through the bite of infected female sandflies. The parasite exists in two principal morphological forms during its life cycle. A sandfly acquires intracellular amastigotes from an infected reservoir host, such as a dog. Within the sandfly, these forms differentiate into motile, flagellated promastigotes. During a subsequent blood meal, promastigotes are injected into the human host, where they...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Ocular dirofilariasis, a rare parasitic infection transmitted by mosquitoes, can cause orbital pain and swelling. Surgical removal of the worm is the recommended treatment for this underdiagnosed condition.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Parasitology

Background:

  • Dirofilariasis is a parasitic disease typically affecting mammals, transmitted by mosquitoes.
  • Ocular dirofilariasis is an uncommon manifestation of this infection, rarely documented in ophthalmic literature.

Observation:

  • A case report details an 81-year-old woman in northern France presenting with left orbital pain and swelling.
  • Slit lamp examination revealed a white worm beneath the superior bulbar conjunctiva.

Findings:

  • Surgical excision of the subconjunctival worm provided adequate treatment and facilitated parasite identification.
  • Dirofilariasis is more prevalent in Italy, with French cases often occurring in the south; ocular symptoms can range from subconjunctival to orbital involvement.

Implications:

  • Ocular dirofilariasis is exceptionally rare and likely underdiagnosed, necessitating increased awareness in clinical practice.
  • Surgical intervention is the primary treatment, with no need for systemic medication.
