Effects of EDTA on End-Point Detection Methods01:18

Effects of EDTA on End-Point Detection Methods

Different methods, such as visual observance of metal-ion indicators, spectroscopic techniques, and potentiometric methods, can determine the endpoint of an EDTA titration.
In the visual method, metal-ion indicators (metallochromic dyes), which have distinct colors in their free and complex forms, are added to the mixture to signal the titration's end point. They form stable complexes with metal ions, but these complexes are weaker than the corresponding metal–EDTA complexes. As a result, EDTA...

Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP)

Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) is a science-based, preventive system used globally to ensure food safety by identifying, evaluating, and controlling biological, chemical, and physical hazards throughout food production. Originally developed by NASA and the Pillsbury Company for astronaut food, HACCP is now a core component of the Codex Alimentarius.HACCP operates on prerequisite programs—such as Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), sanitation procedures, and supplier...
The Y-to-Y Circuit01:19

The Y-to-Y Circuit

In a balanced four-wire wye-to-wye system, the arrangement involves wye-connected sinusoidal voltage sources and loads, connected through a neutral wire that links the neutral nodes of the source and load. The load impedance is connected across each phase of the load. The wye-connected source can be connected to the wye-connected load in four-wire and three-wire arrangements. A three-phase system is considered balanced when the load on each phase is equal, leading to uniform current flow and...
Development of Analytical Methods01:21

Development of Analytical Methods

An analytical methodology can be divided into four sequential steps: technique, method, procedure, and protocol. A technique is a scientific principle that rationalizes a specific phenomenon through chemical measurements. Adapting a technique for analyzing a sample of interest is termed a method. The procedure outlines the directions for performing the analysis via an analytical method. The protocol is the detailed guidelines on the procedure, which should be strictly followed to obtain the...

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Health Workforce Development
  • International Health Education

Background:

  • The Yap Area Health Education Center (AHEC) is a U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration-funded program in the U.S.-Affiliated Pacific Islands.
  • Established in response to the Institute of Medicine's "Pacific Partnerships for Health" report, it aims to develop the local health workforce.
  • Administered by the University of Hawai'i, John A. Burns School of Medicine, it addresses health service and status improvement in Yap State.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To build human capacity within the health workforce in Yap State.
  • To strengthen health services and improve the overall health status of the people of Yap.
  • To pilot test innovative health workforce development approaches for potential regional application.

Main Methods:

  • Established formal partnerships with five regional colleges: Palau Community College, College of Micronesia-FSM, Fiji School of Medicine, University of Hawai'i Hilo, and University of Alaska Anchorage.
  • Facilitated the delivery of 48 courses across various health disciplines, enrolling 143 students.
  • Developed a new 6-course certificate program for community outreach workers in collaboration with the College of Micronesia-FSM and Wa'ab Community Health Center (CHC).

Main Results:

  • 143 students enrolled in 48 courses, covering disciplines such as nursing, health assistance, community health, public health, pharmacy, and x-ray technology.
  • A new certificate program for community outreach workers was developed to support the Wa'ab CHC's service delivery model.
  • Assisted in developing a proposal for a decentralized, on-site (DC-OS) nursing training program, building on pilot testing with Palau Community College.

Conclusions:

  • The Yap AHEC successfully expanded health education access and capacity in Yap State through strategic partnerships and targeted program development.
  • The initiative demonstrates a viable model for health workforce development in underserved Pacific Island jurisdictions.
  • The pilot testing of innovative training approaches, like the DC-OS nursing model, holds promise for broader regional adoption to enhance healthcare delivery.
