Summary

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) most commonly occur in the stomach. CT findings show these tumors as inhomogeneous masses, but cannot solely differentiate benign from malignant GISTs.

Background:

  • Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most common mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Accurate diagnosis and characterization of GISTs are crucial for patient management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the anatomical distribution and computed tomography (CT) findings of GISTs.
  • To evaluate CT features that may indicate malignancy.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of abdominal CT images from 16 patients with pathologically proven GISTs.
  • Evaluation of tumor site, size, borders, growth pattern, enhancement, and signs of malignancy.
