    Area of Science:

    • Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics
    • Quantum Optics

    Background:

    • Background-limited laser receivers need narrow-band optical filters for quantum-noise-limited performance.
    • Cesium (Cs) Faraday filters are crucial components in advanced optical systems.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To measure and model the ultranarrow-band transmission spectrum of a Cs Faraday filter at 852 nm.
    • To assess the filter's performance for potential applications in laser receivers.

    Main Methods:

    • Experimental measurement of the transmission spectrum of a Cs Faraday filter.
    • Theoretical modeling of the filter's spectral characteristics.
    • Analysis of passband shapes and bandwidths under varying operating parameters.

    Main Results:

    • Observed four passbands in the transmission spectrum around the Cs hyperfine doublet lines.
    • Achieved near-unity transmission with a 0.6-GHz bandwidth for peaked passbands.
    • Identified modulated bands with features as sharp as 100 MHz.
    • Demonstrated excellent agreement between experimental data and theoretical calculations at 852 nm.

    Conclusions:

    • The Cs Faraday filter exhibits tunable and ultranarrow-band transmission properties.
    • The filter's performance is predictable, with a calculated 0.7-GHz transmission band for Cs at 455 nm.
    • This research validates the Cs Faraday filter for high-performance optical filtering.
