Summary

Clear cell chondrosarcoma (CCC) is a rare bone tumor. Ultrastructural analysis suggests clear cells in CCC exhibit chondrocyte differentiation, with glycogen accumulation contributing to their clear appearance.

Background:

  • Clear cell chondrosarcoma (CCC) is an uncommon bone neoplasm.
  • This report details a specific case of CCC in a 67-year-old Japanese man.

Observation:

  • The patient presented with a year of right hip joint pain.
  • Histological examination of the resected right femoral bone confirmed CCC.
  • Ultrastructural analysis revealed clear neoplastic cells with perinuclear organelle concentration.

Findings:

  • Clear neoplastic cells contained abundant glycogen particles, particularly in organelle-depleted cytoplasm.
  • Mitochondria, Golgi complex, actin filaments, and rough endoplasmic reticulum were observed within clear cells.
  • Well-developed microvilli were present on the neoplastic cell surfaces, resembling normal chondrocytes.

Implications:

  • Ultrastructural findings support chondrocyte differentiation in clear cells of CCC.
  • The accumulation of glycogen and the relative lack of organelles in specific cytoplasmic areas likely contribute to the characteristic clear cell morphology.
  • This case adds to the understanding of the cellular characteristics and potential differentiation pathways in clear cell chondrosarcoma.
