Sleep Apnea01:21

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a condition where breathing stops intermittently during sleep, often leading to significant health issues. Each episode can last from 10 to 20 seconds or more and is frequently accompanied by a brief arousal from sleep. This disturbance, largely unnoticed by the individual, can lead to severe daytime fatigue. Commonly, individuals seek help after being informed by their partners about loud snoring and noticeable breathing pauses during sleep.
The condition is more prevalent among...

Blind Procedures

Ideally, the people who observe and record the children’s behavior are unaware of who was assigned to the experimental or control group, in order to control for experimenter bias. Experimenter bias refers to the possibility that a researcher’s expectations might skew the results of the study. Remember, conducting an experiment requires a lot of planning, and the people involved in the research project have a vested interest in supporting their hypotheses. If the observers knew which child was...

Summary

An online screening tool effectively encouraged individuals in a weight-loss community to discuss obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) with their doctors. This intervention shows promise for increasing OSA diagnosis rates.

Area of Science:

  • Sleep Medicine
  • Digital Health Interventions
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) remains significantly underdiagnosed.
  • Internet-based weight-loss communities represent a potential population for targeted screening initiatives.
  • A pilot randomized controlled trial was designed to address this gap.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of an online screening intervention for obstructive sleep apnea.
  • To promote screening discussions between members of an Internet weight-loss community and their healthcare providers.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial was conducted with members of an Internet weight-loss community.
  • Participants were randomized to an intervention group (online risk assessment and feedback) or a control group.
  • The primary outcome measured was the participant's discussion of obstructive sleep apnea with a healthcare provider at 12 weeks.

Main Results:

  • The intervention group showed a significantly higher likelihood of discussing obstructive sleep apnea with a healthcare provider compared to the control group (11% vs 2%, P=.02).
  • Among high-risk individuals in the intervention group, discussion rates were substantially higher (19% vs 2%, P=.004).
  • The number needed to treat was 12, indicating a moderate intervention effect.

Conclusions:

  • An online screening intervention is a feasible approach to increase obstructive sleep apnea discussions.
  • The intervention appears effective in prompting healthcare consultations for potential sleep apnea among online weight-loss community members.
  • Further research can explore broader implementation of digital health tools for sleep apnea screening.
