Purpose of the Study:

To review the current understanding of anemia in IBD.
To emphasize the clinical significance and management strategies for anemia in IBD.

Main Methods:

Review of recent studies on anemia in inflammatory bowel disease.
Analysis of the prevalence, causes, consequences, and treatment of anemia in IBD.

Main Results:

Anemia is common in IBD, occurring in both active disease and remission.
Iron, vitamin B12, or folic acid deficiencies are frequent causes.
Anemia and iron deficiency negatively impact patient's clinical status and quality of life.
Oral iron may cause intolerance; intravenous iron is effective and safe.
Erythropoietin may be necessary to normalize hemoglobin levels.
