Summary

This study derived societal values for the EuroQol EQ-5D in Germany, comparing them to UK values. German time trade-off (TTO) values were higher, especially for poorer health states, indicating cultural differences.

Background:

The EuroQol EQ-5D is a widely used instrument for measuring health status.
Understanding societal values for health states is crucial for health policy and economic evaluations.
Previous studies have established health state valuations in the UK.

Purpose of the Study:

To derive societal values for the EuroQol EQ-5D instrument in Germany.
To compare German health state values with those previously obtained in the United Kingdom.
To investigate the influence of cultural factors on health state valuations.

Main Methods:

A survey study was conducted with 339 individuals in northern Germany.
Face-to-face interviews were used to elicit values for 15 health states using the York MVH protocol.
Time trade-off (TTO) and visual analogue scale (VAS) methods were employed.
A regression model estimated values for all 243 EQ-5D health states.

Main Results:

German visual analogue scale (VAS) values showed a close resemblance to British VAS results.
German time trade-off (TTO) values were consistently higher than British TTO values, particularly for worse health states.
The findings suggest TTO values are more sensitive to national variables than VAS values.

Conclusions:

Societal values for the EuroQol EQ-5D differ between Germany and the UK, particularly when using the TTO method.
These cultural differences in TTO values should be considered in health economic evaluations conducted in Germany.
The study provides valuable data for anticipating and accounting for national variations in EQ-5D valuations.
