Background:

The Dutch Dental Association (NMT) investigated the early career experiences of dentists who graduated between 2004 and 2006.
Understanding the professional integration and future aspirations of new dentists is crucial for workforce planning.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the work situation and future plans of recently graduated dentists.
To explore their initial career challenges and preferences.

Main Methods:

A survey was conducted by the Dutch Dental Association (NMT) targeting dentists who graduated in 2004, 2005, or 2006.
The questionnaire focused on their current work status, career aspirations, and early professional experiences.

Main Results:

Most recently graduated dentists reported no significant difficulties starting their careers.
A majority initially worked in colleagues' practices but aspired to own their own practice, with this ambition more pronounced in men.
There was a strong preference for team-based dental practice and plans for specialization.
Task delegation to dental hygienists and prevention assistants was widely accepted.

Conclusions:

Newly qualified dentists generally experience a positive career entry.
The trend indicates a desire for practice ownership, specialization, and collaborative work environments.
The integration of auxiliary dental staff is a normalized aspect of modern dental practice for this cohort.
