Background:

  • Intramedullary nailing is a common method for limb lengthening.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of submuscular locking plate fixation for limb lengthening in patients unsuitable for intramedullary nailing.

Main Methods:

  • Ten patients underwent bone lengthening using a submuscular locking plate and external fixator.
  • Lengthening was performed at 1 mm/day after corticotomy.
  • The external fixator was removed once the target length was achieved.

Main Results:

  • All ten patients achieved their pre-operative target limb length (mean 4.0 cm).
  • The mean duration of external fixation was 61.6 days, with a mean external fixation index of 15.1 days/cm.
  • Complications were minor, and the healing index was significantly longer than the fixation index.

Conclusions:

  • Limb lengthening using a submuscular locking plate is a successful and safe alternative.
  • This technique allows for early fixator removal and reduces complications.
  • It is a useful option for pediatric patients or when intramedullary nailing is challenging.
